ASL Teacher or Robot Teacher?

Please watch and comment on our dear Toby's discussion. What do you think of what he has to say? How do you think ASL should be taught? With the very small Deaf Community here in Duluth, what can I do to help you be more involved? (I have invited speakers but all are working and cannot attend class).

Also notice now he uses pronouns and location/space set up.

  1. Toby Rocks!

Okay, I couldn't agree more. The 'robot teachers' must go. Anyone that thinks ASL is an 'easy' language is probably learning from a robot! Learning only vocabulary, and mostly in english order.

ASL is extremely complex ... the more I learn, the more I realize how little I know!

Monica - I think the "Ball" you have organized and the Keith Wann outing are both great ways for us to interact with the community. There is also the pizza night, and Deaf Coffee chats, etc. For me, its not so much lack of opportunity, but my own lack of confidence (both in ASL and in meeting new people in general).

I guess for me, it may be time to 'face my fears and do it anyway.' Since I LOVE coffee, maybe the coffee chat would be a good opportunity.

  2. I also agree with Toby. Like Julie said before, ASL is a very complex language. Yes it is important to learn vocab, but that is just a minor part in learning any language. You need to know where and when to use the vocab, how to use it etc. He also talked about the facial expression part of the language, and there would be know chance to ever learn that from a robot.

I also agree with Julie on the Deaf community stuff. I don't think it's a lack of things to do, I just don't feel ready to converse in sign who has been using it most of his or her life. I know I could converse and I'm sure it would go pretty well, I just feel like I would get embarrassed easily if I had to ask them to repeat something many times.

  3. Monica -
I think its awesome that Jeff has been coming to class, though. Maybe he is a good 'first step' for us to feel the beginnings of Community involvement.

Unfortunately, my schedule has not been conducive to ASL Club ... however, I would still like to go to Keith Wann - anyone else? I would be willing to drive, and if anyone is brave enough, we could probably spend the night at my parents house after the show - I haven't asked them yet, but I know they would be happy (probably make an awesome breakfast too).

  4. other language it is difficult to learn because language itself is so complex. one might know a lot of words in a different language but do they know how to use them properly in a sentence? or actually communicate with another person in the language? ASL should not be taught by 'robot' teachers because it is such an expressive language.

i dont think it is a lack of things to do as much as clashing schedules and not to mention that i still feel intimidated (not the right word im looking for but i cant think of a better one at the moment)i know i can do it its just so scary to go out of ones comfort zone.
i think it would be fun to interact with deaf children,

  7. Alrighty :) Well I agree... the robot thing sucks. You need to be emersed into the culture to fully understand, experience and embrace the language. Besides it is way better the more you learn and the deeper you get into it! The vocabulary is needed, but like mentioned above it is a minor part that builds with all of the other aspects of the culture. And agreed that it is not easy! Fun, but not easy! :D

Community... Lets go BOWLING! :) Please?! That would be a blast! Also Sammy's Pizza which I have only been able to attend once this semester is a good time as well! Love it. At first I don't want to jump in, but once I do I love every second of it. :) I enjoy learning and meeting new people. Jeff being in class is also a great deal of fun and he is an easy person to get along with a talk to. More outings would be great, but I do understand that everyone has their own lives and it is hard to coordinate schedules. I am not as scared of jumping in and signing, because I know that it will only help me and that if I do mess up people are there to help me and show me where I am going wrong which is all apart of the learning process I have a larger struggle with where to go and where to gain that experience. Again.. BOWLING!!!!!!

    P.S I LOVE Toby!

  8. Okay, I'm up for bowling - or Sammy's ... IF we go together!!! My last experience at Sammy's was not good - felt like an 'intruder' and the place was PACKED!!! Plus, I had to sit near some UMD students who were rude and were talking (voice) most of the time. I finally moved because I felt I was being associated with them ... ugh.

The biggest downside for me is that Thursdays are the only day I DON'T go to Duluth ... is Sammy's on Thursday or Tuesday?
