Deaf Jokes!

Humor is a huge part of Deaf Culture. Here are some popular jokes in the Deaf Community.

Watch the following videos and comment on your understanding of them. Which did you like the best and why? What was hard for you to understand? What is the underlying message in all of these jokes?

  1. Cute! So far I've only watched the first one - funny! His facial expression is awesome - I imagine he enjoys telling jokes!

So, I have to say I'm quite proud of myself.. I only watched it 1x (I will watch again) but at one viewing, I bet I understood about 80% of it! :)

So, a man is chopping trees and the last one just won't go down. He keeps yelling "timber" louder and louder, chopping more and more until this huge tree is just a toothpick in the middle, but still won't go down. Finally he signs T-I-M-B-E-R and it comes crashing down... The tree was deaf - but stayed strong with just a toothpick sized trunk!

    I'll watch more tomorrow - It's late!

  2. WELL... I watched all three, might I add only ONE time. I am proud of myself, same as Julie. The tree one was funny. It reminded me of Deaf Rudolph. The second one I've seen before, in the summer, Monica had a student named Matt come in, and that was one of the stories he told us. Finally the third video. I liked that one. "Enough hearing people..." I laughed out loud... mind you it is 11:03 p.m.

  3. I also only watched one time and understood! :) I liked all of them, but the plenty in my country was my favorite. Although, I have often thought about deaf people getting pulled over and what cops will do to not feel uncomfortable. I think its funny that the hearing man was pulled over by a cop who was coda!

  4. I understood them too! I feel so accomplished! I liked the tree one because it visual, the tooth pick thick piece of tree broke and looked like "sucess" [pah], very funny. The "we have plently of hearing people in my country was probably my favorite though. Also it seems to be a general theme in at least these jokes that the Deaf people are smarter then the hearing, just something to think about.

  5. I think we should all be excited with our increasing abilities! Too bad this is as far as ASL goes at CSS ... Monica - any chance of adding another 'level' of classes to the cirriculum? I would be interested!

Okay - the train one is pushing it! I think its funny, but WOW ... throwing the hearing guy out the window - this would be considered prejudiced if a hearing person threw anybody out the window!

My fav is the tree! Love the Toothpick, and the fingerspelling of Timber! to get it to fall over. :)

  6. It's a yay for me! I want more ASL... more, more, more. My favorite video, however, was the last one. "enough hearing people..." can't get enough of that one. It makes me laugh EVERY time.

  7. WELL - I want MORE ASL! As much as I can get! Please! I would be more than interested! :) Please. I need ASL in my life. It is a must. a HUGE must! I need more events and more ASL! Tonight Lynds and I went to Sammy's Pizza and I couldn't get enough of it. I want more. Please.

Okyay, love Deaf jokes! Love them. The one about the driver was my favorite. I realy enjoyed that one. Made me laugh. I did enjoy the train one, but I kind of felt like Julie did about it being prejudice if it was the other way around. The tree one is funny, but I kind of felt like I knew it was coming. But these were funny and I enjoyed them a lot.

I want to add that we should all go to Sammy's Pizza on Thursday nights. It is a great experience and loads of fun. It is the third Thursday of the month! There is always pizza too!

  8. Haha. These are cute. I like them. I understood them for the most part. I had to watch the last one a couple times. That one was the hardest for me to understand, but for the most part I get it. My favorite was the driving one. Ha. That one really made me laugh out loud (in the library I might add). I wish I could take more ASL classes as well! I want to become as familiar with it as I can. It's a great language, and might I add that it's been my favorite class in my 3 years of attending college! =)
