Blog #10: Fairy Tales

It is time for you to begin developing your fairy tales that you will perform for class during week 15. Before you begin, I have selected two stories for you to watch and comment on. Please comment on what you think that these students did well and what they need to improve. What do you think will be easiest and most difficult for you as you develop your stories? What can you do to help yourself?
I would like you to watch these two fairy tales created by ASL students.

  1. I thought that they both had very good facial expressions! I found the second one much easier to understand, I thought that she did a good job with placement. You could easily tell which character she was. The first girl used some classifiers. I thought that she did an ok job with them, It wasn't perfect, but who is. She could have done a better job with placement.

I think that the most difficult part for me will placement. I haven't really gotten good at that. I'll have to practice a lot and have my group mates help me :)

  2. Wow I really enjoyed these stories! I must say I liked the princess and the pea story better, even though it was harder for me to follow, because it was visually more pleasing. Also, the girl who signed it had amazing placement and facial expressions and switched between characters very well. I think she could have made it better if she would have slowed it down a little bit. It was very confusing when she was signing all of the royalty signs.

I also like the boy who cried wolf. This story was put into a very basic format and I was able to understand all of it. I really liked how she distinguished who she was while she was telling the story, but I feel like it would make a better story if she would have figured out a way to become the boy and the father without saying who she was.

I don't know if i can really say any of this is going to be easy for me. If I would have to pick, I think it would have to be the first form of translation (without classifiers, placement, character personality). The hardest for me is going to be getting into the persona of my character, also, placement is going to be an issue. Facial expressions should be fine them more I practice my part, I feel that it will just come naturally.

  3. These were both done quite nicely. The boy who cried wolf was easy to follow. What I didn't like about it was how she signed boy at first I thought it was unicorn. Then her placement wasn't the greatest but it was done nicely. The princess and the pea was done with nice fluidity. Se had nice placement and i found it easy to follow. I was a little confused on the differences between prince and princess. They both had good facial expressions and did a nice job translating it.

I think the hardest part is going to be translating the story. Also getting into character is going by far the hardest part. But I think once our group has it down pat and get confident in signing it I think we will all be in character and have fun with it.

  4. i like the first one the best the story was way easier to follow..... but she should have cleaned her room....lol... the second story the princess and the pea was a little bit harder to understand because it was more of a complex story and she had to explain things a little more.

i think it will be hard to translate the story and to pick the right story.

  6. I really enjoyed watching both of these stories because they were both so different. Like some of the others said, the first story was very basic and easy to follow, but she needed to work on placement. The second story however, was much more complex but the placement was excellent which made it easy to follow as well. Both of their outfits and backgrounds could have been different to make it easier to follow too. But i think they both did a great job.

I think the hardest part for me will be translating the story and writing it out in ASL, i struggle with that. Also, placement and facial expression can be a challenge if i'm thinking about it too hard. I'm gonna need practice but it will be fun!
