Josie's Post

This week Josie has selected our topic. Thanks Josie!

This is so cool! I think this is a great event for the Deaf community, but like everything else, I have never heard of it... Its a good way to get the whole community together in a fun entertaining way. Watch the video, what do you think about the event? What do you think about their translations? What is it comparable to in the hearing culture. And of course who is your favorite? :)

  1. I enjoyed watching the video. Surprised actually that we havent stumbled upon this in class yet, considering how popular the Idol type shows are today.

I liked all the translations - Jewel was pretty adorable as well. I definitely feel while watching these I'm back in class watching Monica tell stories which was really fun to watch.

  2. I am with Jared on this one. I am surprised that in the last year and a half that we haven't heard about this. This is a cool event. It is like America has talent but this event takes place in a short time period. One lady was talking to her daughter and I think she was using English ASL. My favorite one was probably Jewel or the 1st boy that went.

At first I thought this was just gonna be about people translating songs but I was wrong. Good Choice Josie.

  3. Like Emily and Jared, I too am surprised that we have not seen this in class yet. I think this is a really neat event, it's like a bunch of people coming together preforming skits they have created. Some were stories, some were jokes, and so on. Like Emily I thought too that it was going to be interpretations of songs.

This does very much remind me of America's Got talent, a place were anyone of any age can come and share their talents to an audience. I think that this event is very important for the Deaf community, because as Monica says there aren't very many events like this one.

I think there translations were great. I understood most of what was going on, but some stuff I had no clue. I'm assuming it is because they are signing from the South.

My favorite was Ann Horn, she told the blonde joke. I think the joke was something about a truck driver and a blonde in a car. She thought the truck driver was waving at her when he really just wanted her to move over...idk something to that effect. What do ya'll think?

  4. Yeah, I agree with you amanda. The thing that i really liked about Ann Horn was that you could easily understand what she was talking about because for her body language and expressions. She did a good job of signing two different people. Each character was easily identifiable.

I thought this event was cool, because I kind of took it as each person's interpretation of their "topic." If the little girl would have done the 'darklight' she would have probably signed something different and so on.

  5. Dudeee this is awesome! That would be so cool to go to one of these! I really like this event, 14 million times better than actual American Idol in my opinion. I like how they all come together and each sign different scenarios. I'd have to say the driving one was pretty funny so that one is my favorite. Like what you guys also said that each scenario is probably interpreted differently by people or at least if one of them were to do the same, they would not be the same story. Like they would sign it different and so on. This is really cool, the translations were good, didn't understand some parts but still cool.

  6. Like everyone else said, I was very surprised at this video! I thought for sure I would have heard of something as cool as this in ASL class or maybe Into to Deaf Culture. It just goes to show that so much of the Deaf culture is never seen or heard about unless you go out looking for it. It is so cool that we all get the opportunity to be introduced to so many things that deal with the Deaf culture and ASL in our classes because some people could go their whole lives without ever even getting the slightest idea of what it's all about.

I definitely agree with Amanda and Josie, Ann Horn was very pleasing to watch. She was easy to understand and had great facial expression and body language. Of course, I also thought Jewel was adorable, but the first boy, Travis's performance was very easy to understand and very cool too!

  7. It reminded me a lot of watching Slam Poetry, especially in the adults. Lots of emotion through the signing, relaying information in a somewhat unique way. Very cool.

  8. I guess I am not getting what the little girl was signing...can someone explain? The fact Im not getting it could be why I dont particularly like her act :/
